"Ohio Hidden Mine"

The TWIN brothers Marion and Milton Dessecker operated their underground coal mine hidden in the rolling hills outside of New Philadelphia, Ohio in Tuscarawas County.
The American Industrial Mining team is proud to now capture this untold story.

The Twin Dessecker brothers were farmers in the summer & coal miners  in their mine during the winter from September to May.

The brothers opened the drift mine on their property in 1947. While in operation
the Desseckers were well known for keeping federal mine inspectors off their land.

(Marion Dessecker)

  • The Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act of 1969 just so happens to be the exact same year as when the Desseckers' filed for abandonment.

  • They continued to mine coal behind locked gates until 1995.
