Joseph P. Ruth standing next to one of the many manufactured 3 ton Ruth Trammer Locomotives.
All the steel castings had the name Ruth casted in them. Joseph made it his personal mission to develop a diesel conditioning system to be able to operate diesel motors underground. He succeeded with a patent granted to him in 1952.
 

A height of 4'-6" by only 31-1/2 " Wide
 
The following models were offered for the Gasoline type locomotive:
2, 2-1/2, 3, 3-1/2. 4 & 5 ton
 

Ruth Gasoline Locomotive 3 ton trammer.
Ford AA-6,000 type gasoline engines were utilized with the L-head configuration.

The Articulated Ruth Diesel Trammer Locomotive

This unit was for the U.S. Bureau of Mines utilized to assist in the maintenance for the Leadville drainage tunnel near Leadville, Colorado.

The Articulated Ruth Diesel Trammer Locomotive
3 Ton 30 hp
Unit #4 was for United States Steel Tennesse Coal and Iron Co.
4 locomotives operated successfully at the Zinc Mine Works near Jefferson City, Tennessee.
 
Nicknamed the "Diesel MULE"
Notice the simplicity of the construction of the frame. No brake shoes only band brakes to stop the mine trains in motion.
3 ton Ruth Diesel Locomotive Trammer just finished completeion at the Ruth Company shops. This unit was equipped with a canopy.

Interesting.....Diesel is misspelled in the casting
Looking at the additional pictures this was corrected by changing it to Ruth Diesel Mine Mule.

5 Ton Ruth Diesel Locomotive operating at the Great Western Sugar Company Limestone Mine.
This was the 4th unit put into service at this loaction by 1953.
 
This unit was also equipped with a MRX-10 Ruth Diesel Exhaust Conditioner which allowed it to operate safely underground.
